Health services Department

The Health Services Department is headed by the City Health Officer and is responsible for coordination and Management of health services in the City to ensure preventive and curative health delivery systems.

 

Key Functions 

  • Promote policies, actions for health and sustainable development and monitor and evaluate the delivery of health programs and services in the City;
  • Manage the implementation of the Uganda National Minimum Health Care Package;
  • Provide technical guidance and support supervision to Health Centres;
  • Coordinate the maintenance of Health equipment and facilities; 
  • Interpret and integrate National Health Policies in the City Health Plans; 
  • Coordinate PHC sensitization programs in the Communities;
  • Manage health research and collect and collate health data and statistics;
  • Develop and maintain a Health Management Information System in the City; 
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders in enforcing adherence to National Health Service Delivery Standards;
  • Enforce the Professional and Service Codes of Conduct and Ethics; and
  • Strengthen the prevention and control systems for non-communicable and communicable diseases including emergency response.

     

    BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • Hoima was gazetted as a City on 23rd August 2020 by Parliament of Uganda hence elevating from a health sub-district within Hoima District to a fully pledged entity like any other District. 
  • The health sector comprises of majorly two sub-sectors; Preventive/ Promotive Health Services and Curative/clinical Health Services
  • Curative Health Services are offered through our 6 (six) public health facilities 3 (three) Health Centre IIIs and 3 (three) Health Centre IIs. In addition, under the management of their respective forces, we have a Police HCIII and a Prisons HCII. 
  • There are two Private Not For Profit (PNFP) health facilities and these are Azur Christian Health Centre and Bujumbura HCIII under Bunyoro Kitara Diocese (Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau) and Hoima Catholic Diocese (Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau) respectively. 
  • The city also hosts Hoima Regional Referral Hospital which is managed by central gov’t that provides specialized care and handles referral cases from the region of 9 (nine) Districts of Hoima, Kibaale, Kakumiro, Kagadi, Buliisa, Masindi, Kiryandongo, Kiboga and Kyankwanzi.
